The Old Ship/Hingham Cemetery celebration to mark the occasion of our country’s 250th birthday begins Friday, June 5th, 7 PM, at Old Ship. In a brief and inspiring talk, historian James Conroy will connect the revolutionary spirit of 1776 to the questions facing American democracy today. Then, as the sun sets, attendees will walk a lighted path from the meeting house to the Cemetery’s Ames Chapel. Massachusetts poet laureate Regie Gibson will toast the Spirits of ’76 to kick off the rest of the evening, filled with tasty hors d’oeuvres, libations and good cheer.
The Ames Chapel is located at 12 South South Street, Hingham, just up the gentle hill as you drive through the granite posts of Hingham Cemetery.

On Saturday, June 6th, starting at 10 AM at the Old Ship Meeting House, guides will give tours through Hingham Cemetery to the graves of 36 Hinghamites who were alive during the Revolutionary War — actual spirits of 1776. Tour goers will be introduced to townspeople who at that time were carpenters, bucket makers, farmers, doctors, a blacksmith, a printer, a minister, a pair of enterprising bakers, a couple of window makers, a hatter, a weaver, and — last but certainly not least — wives who raised large families by themselves and managed farms or family business during long periods while their husbands were off at sea or fighting for liberty.
Tour goers will have an opportunity to stop for lemonade and cookies along the way. The tours run for about an hour and a half; they are appropriate for youths in 4th grade and older, and for people comfortable walking on uneven ground. The rain date is Sunday, June 7 at 1:00 pm.
